Signs That You Need A Full Roof Replacement

Posted on: 17 July 2017

Asphalt roofs are often chosen by homeowners because they last a long time. They also can be fixed when shingles dislodge, crack, or shown minimal signs of wear. However, a replacement might be needed if damage and wear are much more widespread. If you are wondering whether or not you need to invest in a full replacement, then keep reading to find out about some signs that this is your best option:

Shingles Are Retaining Water

If you notice that your shingles appear a dark color when it rains, then they are retaining water. Shingles contain a good deal of a petroleum product called bitumen. This is the same material that is used to make your asphalt driveway and it repels moisture. However, sun damage, wind, snow, ice, and other types of weather damage cause the oily material to evaporate. This leaves the shingles far less pliable and drier than they once were.

Dry shingles contain only the organic paper or felt structure that makes up their base. These materials can easily absorb water. When shingles do this, you will see some other signs that include waves across the shingles, folds that build in the middle, bent edges, curls, and swelling shingle material.

If you leave shingles on your roof when they start to retain moisture, then this issue can result in a leak. Water will remain in contact with the felt paper that protects the deck from damage. The moisture can then find its way into holes and openings in this paper and enter your attic space.

Shingles No Longer Hold Granules

Shingles are meant to resist damage from temperature extremes and the strong UV radiation from the sun is one thing that your shingles naturally protect themselves against. They do this with the small, shiny, and hard rocks that adhere to the outer surfaces of the shingles. These rocks are ceramic and mineral granules that are prepared with a special reflective coating. The coating forces the sun's rays to bounce away from the roof.

Shingle granules reduce thermal damage, and they keep your roof cool, but they will dislodge from the roof shingles. Granules are baked onto the surface of the shingles, so they cannot be replaced with the same type of adhesion or consistency as they were during the manufacturing process. This means that the plan shingles are exposed to sun damage once the granules start to fall away.

Once the majority of your shingles no longer contain granules, it is time to start looking for a roof replacement. The shingles will continue to deteriorate and heat gain will be an issue in your attic space as well. Contact a company like Select Exteriors for more information and assistance.

The Importance Of Roof Repair

One day last month while it was raining outside, my wife and I noticed that water was dripping inside the house. We placed a bucket under the drip so the water wouldn't ruin the floor. The next day, I called a roofing company and a contractor came to the house and inspected our roof. The contractor discovered that several shingles were missing from our roof and that's what caused the leak. The day after the roof inspection, the roofers came to our home and replaced the missing shingles. That night it rained again and my wife and I were glad that the roof leak was fixed. My name is Timothy Warren and I'm writing this blog to inform others about roof leaks and the importance of roof repair. I hope that by reading this blog, you can avoid costly damage to your home because of a leaky roof.
