Why Taking Care Of Your Rain Gutters Matters

Posted on: 30 November 2017

When it comes to home maintenance, many homeowners focus on certain areas, like keeping the interior of their home clean and tidy, and do not pay as much attention to others. One of the areas that they do not always focus on is their rain gutters. However, there are many reasons that a home's rain gutters are extremely important to overall home maintenance and care. If you have not been paying the attention to your rain gutters that you probably should, get to know some of the reasons that taking care of your rain gutters matters. Then you can be sure to hire a professional gutter service to help you get your gutters into good shape once again.

Clogged Rain Gutters Can Damage Your Roof

One of the main reasons that it is so important to keep your rain gutters well-maintained and clean is because of your roof. Clogged up rain gutters can damage the roof of your home. When too much debris accumulates in your gutters, any extra debris that will pile up can and will get pushed up against your roof.

If it piles up mainly on top of the roof, the rotting leaves along with the friction that occurs from that debris moving on your roof can cause surface damage as well as problems with moss, mold, and mildew. However, the more likely scenario is that some of that debris will get pushed up under your shingles. When this happens, the underlayment of your roof is exposed and will suffer damage as well.

The underlayment is the final layer of protection between the outdoors and the rest of your house. If it becomes rotted or severely damaged from gutter accumulations, then you could have water leaking into you house or develop an interior as well as exterior mold and rot problem.

Your House Could Flood From Malfunctioning Rain Gutters

Another reason rain gutters are so important for your home is the fact that they are designed to protect your home from flooding. The water from rain and melting snow and ice on your roof runs down your roof into your gutters and the rain gutters funnel that water into drain spouts that aim the water to flow away from your home. This prevents large quantities of water from pooling right around the foundation of your home.

When your rain gutters are full and overflowing or they start to sag or pull away from your house (creating gaps), that water will fall right against your foundation. If enough water pools up there, the likelihood of flooding increases exponentially.

Now that you know two of the main reasons that your rain gutters are so important, you can be sure to hire a professional gutter surface, such as Hogan  Roofing, as soon as possible to ensure that your rain gutters are in the best shape possible.

The Importance Of Roof Repair

One day last month while it was raining outside, my wife and I noticed that water was dripping inside the house. We placed a bucket under the drip so the water wouldn't ruin the floor. The next day, I called a roofing company and a contractor came to the house and inspected our roof. The contractor discovered that several shingles were missing from our roof and that's what caused the leak. The day after the roof inspection, the roofers came to our home and replaced the missing shingles. That night it rained again and my wife and I were glad that the roof leak was fixed. My name is Timothy Warren and I'm writing this blog to inform others about roof leaks and the importance of roof repair. I hope that by reading this blog, you can avoid costly damage to your home because of a leaky roof.
