Spring Cleaning? 3 Tips On Restoring Your Asphalt Roof

Posted on: 7 April 2018

If you are planning to spring clean your home part of your chores should be the exterior of your home. One place to start is your roof. If it is old, you may be able to restore the roof. If you want to do this, follow the three tips below. You can then decide if you want to keep your roof or replace it with a new one.

1. Make Repairs

Before you get started with roof restoration make sure your roof is in good condition. To do this, you need to climb up on your roof to check for any type of damage. Climbing up on your roof is very dangerous so never do this alone. Purchase a type of apron to wear around your waist to carry roofing nails and new shingles in. This way your hands will always be free.

If you see only a few shingles that are loose, you can secure them back down. If there are only a few missing shingles, replace them with new shingles.

If you see a lot of loose or damaged shingles the roof needs to be replaced.

2. Clean the Roof

If your roof has any thing built up on it, such as algae or moss, you need to clean the shingles before you do anything else. Bleach is the best product to use to kill and remove the algae or moss.

Put equal parts of bleach and water in a sprayer and spray the stained areas. Let the bleach sit on the roof for approximately 20 to 30 minutes to give it time to kill the algae or moss. Wear rubber gloves while doing this, as well as face and eye protection.

After the 20 to 30 minutes, rinse the bleach off with a standard garden hoses. Do not use a pressure washer as you could damage your roof if not used correctly.

3. Paint the Roof

Painting your roof will not only change the way it looks but will put a protective coating on the roof. For example, painting can prevent roof leaks, as well as roof damage due to extreme weather conditions.

You can find roofing paint at home improvement stores, and it is available in a variety of colors. If you like the color of your current shingles, however, there are clear coats that you can purchase.

If you are not sure what type of paint you need, ask a roofing contractor to help you.

If you do not want to do these tips, contact a roofing contractor to restore your roof for you. This will ensure it is done correctly so the restoration will last a long time. Check out a website like http://www.darnellroofing.com for more information and assistance.

The Importance Of Roof Repair

One day last month while it was raining outside, my wife and I noticed that water was dripping inside the house. We placed a bucket under the drip so the water wouldn't ruin the floor. The next day, I called a roofing company and a contractor came to the house and inspected our roof. The contractor discovered that several shingles were missing from our roof and that's what caused the leak. The day after the roof inspection, the roofers came to our home and replaced the missing shingles. That night it rained again and my wife and I were glad that the roof leak was fixed. My name is Timothy Warren and I'm writing this blog to inform others about roof leaks and the importance of roof repair. I hope that by reading this blog, you can avoid costly damage to your home because of a leaky roof.
