Tips for Caring for Metal Roofing Material

Posted on: 16 October 2018

Do you own a building that has metal roofing? If so, you may be unfamiliar with the care that is required over the years, since it can be quite different than a roof made with asphalt shingles. While metal requires less maintenance than other materials, it can still have problems over the years. Dirt can accumulate, algae and mold can cause stains to form, and the surface can become less energy efficient as the protective coating wears off. Here are some things you should know about caring for metal roofing material.

Applying a New Protective Coat

When the metal roofing material was originally installed, it had a roof coating already applied to the surface. This coating is designed to last for a few years and will eventually wear away, which will make the metal more vulnerable. The roof will no longer reflect the heat from the sun as efficiently, causing the surface to expand and contract from the heat. This can cause wear and tear on the material over the years, which in turn causes metal fasteners to become loose as a result. The roof coating will also help the roof become waterproof, which prevents interior and exterior damage to your home during a storm.

Cleaning with a Pressure Washer

If you have stains on the surface of the roof, you'll likely want to find a way to remove them. The best method to do this is with a pressure washer. If you do not own one, you can rent one from your local home improvement store.

You want to work the pressure washer over the roof with slow motions since the roof will need several passes to help dislodge the algae that is on the surface. Water pressure also helps remove dirt and debris that are stuck in the ridges of the roofing material. Consider using a detergent in the pressure washer to help clear away any dirt that is stuck to the surface. If you use a detergent, you'll want to rinse off the surface of the roof to ensure that there is not a soapy residue left behind.

Always move the pressure washer from the top of the roof and work towards the bottom. You should see the dirt come off the surface, and the roof will appear much lighter in appearance when you are finished.

If you need help caring for your metal roof, be sure to work with a commercial metal roof service that can handle it for you.

The Importance Of Roof Repair

One day last month while it was raining outside, my wife and I noticed that water was dripping inside the house. We placed a bucket under the drip so the water wouldn't ruin the floor. The next day, I called a roofing company and a contractor came to the house and inspected our roof. The contractor discovered that several shingles were missing from our roof and that's what caused the leak. The day after the roof inspection, the roofers came to our home and replaced the missing shingles. That night it rained again and my wife and I were glad that the roof leak was fixed. My name is Timothy Warren and I'm writing this blog to inform others about roof leaks and the importance of roof repair. I hope that by reading this blog, you can avoid costly damage to your home because of a leaky roof.
